New from Extension: Gain early insights on WSU’s new apple and navigate the honey bee mite spectrum

Two newly released publications from WSU Extension share early insights on how to grow and manage WSU’s newest apple variety, WA 64, and help Washington beekeepers face a destructive, global pest of honey bees.

Navigating the Mite Spectrum in Honey Bee Colonies: From Harmful Tropilaelaps to Harmless Counterparts (FS399E)

Beekeepers should be on the lookout for the globally expanding Tropilaelaps mite, described in this new guide by WSU Department of Entomology scientists Briana Price, Brandon Hopkins, and Priyadarshini Chakrabarti, and WSDA Pollinator Health Coordinator Katie Buckley. Comparing well-known with lesser-known honey bee mites, this publication describes detection methods and surveillance strategies, life cycle, management recommendations, and other useful information for apiculturists.

Tree Characteristics and Management Recommendations for WA 64 (EM130E)

This new guide shares growth data and early insights on management of WSU’s newly released apple variety, WA 64, a cross between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink expected to reach growers in 2026. Associate Professor Bernardita Sallato, Research Associate Professor Sara Serra, Professor Kate Evans, Professor and Endowed Chair Stefano Musacchi, and Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission research associate Manoella Mendoza are co-authors. Data on tree habits, pollinizers, thinning, training, pruning, harvest, and more come from trials at WSU’s Sunrise Research Orchard at Wenatchee and the Roza Research Farm at Prosser, Washington.
