Episode Transcription

From Washington State University Extension, welcome to Food Safety in a Minute.

In late 2023, three companies voluntarily recalled specific applesauce products due to elevated levels of lead and chromium. WanaBana recalled apple cinnamon pouches of fruit puree, the Schnucks Company cinnamon-flavored applesauce and variety packs, and Weis recalled cinnamon applesauce. If you’re just learning about this recall, inspect your pantry immediately. Recalled products have a shelf life of 14 months.

Young children are especially susceptible to lead poisoning. Elevated levels of lead in foods such as applesauce can lead to increased blood levels of lead. Children may experience symptoms such as anemia, weakness, fatigue, learning and behavioral issues, decreased IQ, abdominal pain, and nausea. If you suspect lead poisoning, visit your pediatrician for a blood test.

This is Susie Criag from Food Safety in a Minute.
