Episode Transcription

From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.

An investigation is underway of an E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak linked to RAW FARMbrand raw Cheddar blocks and shredded cheese items. No cases have been reported in Washington State thus far. However, RAW FARM Cheddar is retailed nationwide, posing a risk for further spread due to distribution in retail and food service outlets and extended shelf life.

This foodborne illness is dangerous; even minimal bacterial contamination can lead to severe health complications such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease, neurological issues, even death. According to the USDA Food Keeper App, unopened block Cheddar is good for six months when refrigerated, while shredded Cheddar lasts a month refrigerated or 3-4 months if frozen.

Thanks for listening, I’m Susie Craig.
