From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.
Memorial Day, honoring those who lost their lives serving in our country’s military, marks the beginning of summer activities with family and friends. With summer, warmer weather causes bacteria to grow and multiply more quickly, increasing the risk of foodborne illness.
For a healthy and fun-filled Memorial Day follow these four tips:
- Wash your hands before and after handling food, especially uncooked meat,
poultry, and fish. Assume they may harbor harmful bacteria. It’s easy to cross
contaminate especially to fresh produce and other foods not requiring cooking. - Cook foods to appropriate endpoint temperatures. Check online with USDA or
FDA if you’re unsure. - Remember to keep hot food hot and cold foods cold.
- And avoid leaving perishable foods out for more than two hours.
Enjoy your holiday weekend, I’m Susie Craig from Washington State University Extension.
