Episode Transcription

From Washington State University Extension, I’m Susie Craig.

Did you know fish may contain mercury? Mercury enters our environment from fossil fuels and industrial pollution. Deposited in fresh waters and oceans, mercury is absorbed by fish from the water or by eating smaller fish. Once ingested, it stays in our bodies

Fish is important in a healthy diet. However, consumption of fish with high levels of mercury may lead to serious health problems. This is especially true for expectant and nursing women, women of childbearing age, and young children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends they avoid consuming all shark, swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel, orange roughy, and fresh or frozen tuna steaks. Learn more about mercury in fish. Visit the Food and Drug Administration website.
