Thinking about making food gifts for the holidays? Many Americans are at high risk for foodborne illness. Recipes for food gifts found online may or may not be safe. How do you know? Search for Cottage Food Operations in Washington State. Though you aren’t selling your food gifts, you’ll find a complete list of low-risk options. Checking the options will help you evaluate recipes found online.

On the Cottage Food Operations in Washington State website, low-risk options include:

  • Breads, rolls, biscuits, quick breads, muffins, scones, and pastries.
  • Cakes including sweet cakes with fresh fruit or vegetables incorporated into the batter, then baked.
  • Snack mixes.
  • Candies cooked on a stove top or microwave with temperature monitoring.
  • Seasoning mixes with dry ingredients, soup mixes, dip mixes.
