For Food Safety in a Minute, I’m Susie Craig.

Here are three guidelines rarely included for recipes in cookbooks, online, or your cherished family recipe box. Add them, follow them to prepare safe food at home.

  • Wash your hands at the beginning of food preparation and after touching raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs. With soap and water, scrub for 20 seconds, dry with a paper towel.
  • Add recipe directions to prevent cross contamination. Avoid rinsing raw poultry or meat, wash and rinse counters, cutting boards, and utensils after contact with raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs.
  • When following a salad recipe with fresh fruits and vegetables, always wash produce under cool running water. Scrub firm produce with a clean vegetable brush under running water.

This is Susie Craig from Washington State University Extension.
