This month our podcasts highlight online food safety resources. Resources to improve your food safety practices and prevent foodborne illness. Our focus today? Tips for Food Safe Shopping and Storage from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

  • Avoid purchasing meat, poultry, or seafood in damaged or leaking packaging.
  • Keep produce separate from meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs in shopping carts and bags. Do the same in your refrigerator.
  • Place meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs in plastic bags at checkout
  • Avoid overfilling your refrigerator or freezer.
  • Avoid buying eggs with cracked shells or damaged cartons.
  • Set refrigerator temperature at 40 degrees F or lower. Your freezer at 0 degrees F or lower.
