Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute.

Avian influenza is spreading from backyard poultry coops in Washington State. If you have backyard poultry, here are things you can do to stop the spread of bird flu to commercial poultry and to protect wild waterfowl, eagles, hawks, and falcons.

  • Keep visitors to a minimum – including family and friends.
  • Wash hands before and after poultry contact.
  • Use disposable boot covers.
  • Change clothes before and after entering your backyard coop.
  • Clean and disinfect tools and equipment.
  • Look for signs of illness in your flock.
  • Prevent contact with wild birds.
  • Report sick birds to Washington State Department of Agriculture

For Food Safety in a Minute, I’m Susie Craig from Washington State University Extension.
