FSM 164: Noroviruses in the United States

Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute.

Did you know noroviruses are the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States? Often referred to “stomach flu”, with vomiting and diarrhea, it isn’t influenza. It’s acute gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noroviruses infect 20 million Americans annually. It can be a serious for the elderly and children under 5 years. In the United States by the time a child is five years of age, 1 in 110,000 will die from norovirus, 1 in 160 will be hospitalized, 1 in 40 will visit an Emergency Department, and 1 in 7 a health care clinic.
