From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.

90% of infections on cruise ships are from noroviruses. This represents about 1% of total norovirus infections in America. Outbreaks often spread through hand contact with contaminated surfaces. Once your hands touch the surface, then food, the virus enters your body when you eat, likely causing illness. Enhance your safety and reduce your risk of norovirus onboard by:

  • Avoiding bare hand contact with food. Use utensils or a napkin to pick up food as you eat.
  • Make choices at the buffet, then wash your hands prior to eating. Serving utensils are touched by hundreds of passengers.
  • When entering your cabin, wash your hands thoroughly to prevent surface contamination in your room.

Please Note: Hand sanitizers are not effective against noroviruses.

Thanks for listening, I’m Susie Craig.
