Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute from Washington State University Extension.

When you’re grilling often expensive meat, poultry, and seafood this summer, cooking to the appropriate end-point temperature ensures food safety and avoids overcooking. Grilling to those recommended temperatures requires the use of a thermometer.

Purchase thermometers from retail stores, on-line, or stores selling barbeque grills. Thermometers used for grilling range from relatively inexpensive to high-priced. No matter the cost, always follow manufacturer’s instructions. Many consumers enjoy using a fork thermometer equipped with a temperature-sensing device embedded in one of the tines. Most have digital read-outs and indicators showing you when meat, poultry and seafood have reached rare, medium, and well-done. After cooking, wash by hand with hot soapy water following manufacturer’s directions.
