This is Food Safety in a Minute.

Did you know pregnant women are 10 times more likely to get listeriosis possibly leading to miscarriage, stillbirth, or preterm labor? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have a website with helpful information including steps you can take to reduce the risk of an infection from Listeria.

While pregnant:

  • Avoid all raw and undercooked seafood, eggs, meat, and poultry.
  • Avoid drinking raw milk or eating cheese made with unpasteurized milk.
  • Avoid hot dogs and luncheon meats unless they are heated to steaming.
  • Avoid refrigerated meat spreads and smoked seafood.

Cooking and pasteurization are the only ways to destroy Listeria. These food safety guidelines will help keep you and your baby healthy.

From Washington State University Extension, this is Susie Craig.
