Episode Transcription

Vegetarians, flexitarians, and consumers concerned about the environment are choosing plant-based meat alternatives. In 2019, sales were $12 billion expected to reach $28 billion by 2025. The question of whether plant-based meat alternatives are healthier is complicated. If you have allergies, read the label carefully. Products contain soybeans, chickpeas, and peas which may cause allergic reactions. Many also contain gluten.

Sally Kuzemchak, an award-winning writer and registered dietitian says a nutritional advantage is they are a good source of protein without cholesterol. Most are considered “ultra-processed” with many ingredients. Therefore, not a great choice if you’re looking for a clean label and minimally processed food. Finally, they may have just as many calories as beef.
