From Washington State University Extension, welcome to Food Safety in a Minute.

Did you know babies have increased risks for foodborne illness? Lacking a fully developed immune system, they are more likely to become ill if exposed to disease causing bacteria. They are also more likely to have serious complications, increased risk of hospitalization, and a more difficult time getting well.

For babies on formula, start with a clean bottle which has been sterilized in boiling water. Mix enough for one feeding. Whether breast or formula feeding, throw out any that is left over.

Breast milk and pre-prepared formula may be stored in a refrigerator at forty (40) degrees F or below for up to forty-eight (48) hours. Use an appliance thermometer to check temperature inside your refrigerator. These precautions keep your baby safe and healthy.
