Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute from Washington State University Extension.

Do you have sunflowers growing in your backyard? For many home gardeners they’re in plentiful supply this time of year. To dry sunflower seeds, wrap the whole flower with cheesecloth to prevent birds from eating the seeds. They may be sun-dried on the flower or placed in a dehydrator at 100 degrees F. Avoid higher temperatures as this negatively affects their flavor. When dry, they can be roasted in a shallow pan at 300ºF for 10 to 15 minutes.

After cooling the sunflower seeds, store them in clean, dry home canning jars, freezer containers or zip-lock bags. Place them in a cool, dark, dry place for storage. For more information about food safety and drying foods, visit the National Center for Home Food Preservation.
