Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute.

Did you know the Food and Drug Administration approves food color additives in food, cosmetics, drugs, and medical devices such as contact lenses? Visit the Food and Drug Administration website to learn more about color additives approved for use in food.

Before approving any new food additive, including food colors, the FDA requires longterm and short-term studies evaluating the effects of consumption in food. They also study the chemical properties of the additive and its’ chemical composition. The Food and Drug Administration oversees manufacturing processes along with testing methods safeguarding the purity and amount of coloring in a food product. They also conduct ongoing safety studies of approved food colors.
