Welcome to Food Safety in a Minute, this is Susie Craig.
As an older adult, preventing foodborne illness is essential for good health.
- Wash your hands before preparing food, after handling raw meat, poultry and fish, and before you eat. Twenty seconds with soap and warm water. Dry with a paper towel.
- Watch for food recalls and outbreaks.
- Cook food to USDA safe minimum internal temperatures. For example, poultry should be cooked to 165 degrees F. Use a thermometer.
- Avoid eating raw or undercooked seafood. If you harvest shellfish, check for advisories before you dig.
- Rinse produce under cool, running water before eating.
- Always choose pasteurized juices and milk.
- Clean and sanitize your kitchen counters
