From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.

When’s the last time you cleaned your pantry? A supply of shelf stable food is a great way to prepare for power outages and natural disasters. For many families, however, the pantry fills up with newly purchased items pushing older food to the back. Out of sight, out of mind.

To get started, move food in your pantry to kitchen countertops. Next,

  • Discard cans which are bulging, rusted, leaking, or badly dented.
  • Discard products past their “use by” date.
  • Wipe up spills, then clean and sanitize pantry shelves.
  • Organize, placing older food near the front.
  • With each new food purchase, use a permanent marker indicating purchase date. Place at the back of other similar items.
  • Rotate your canned goods, using the oldest first.
