Do you order food gifts online for your family and friends? There are things you can do before and after you place your order to ensure food safety. Check out the company first, reading reviews from customers including shipping practices. Many food gifts are not perishable such as fruit, jams, nuts, candy, and popcorn.

Other items such as lobster pot pie, fresh or frozen seafood, spiral cut ham, and cheesecake are perishable and require special handling for safe shipping. Retailers routinely use two-day shipping with orders placed Monday through Wednesday. Packed in foam or heavy cardboard, perishable items will be cooled with cold packs or dry ice.

Let recipients know when to expect delivery. They need to be able to immediately refrigerate the food items.
