From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.

Did you know when you buy a food labeled “organic” the product has been grown and produced using methods approved by the United States Department of Agriculture? The National Organic Program was established in 2001.

This program accredits growers and processors to train inspectors certifying their operations meet national organic standards. Food products with the green and white USDA Organic Seal:

  • Have been grown and processed organically,
  • Are made of and with approved substances, and
  • Are USDA verified.

USDA approved, trained agents regularly inspect growers and processors and check labeling information for accuracy. Visit the USDA Organic Seal website to learn more.
