“What’s for lunch?” With school starting, you may be looking for ways to safely pack healthy foods and beverages for your child. If they include perishable foods, it is important to keep those foods cold and to use good food handling practices during preparation.

Here are a few tips to keep foods cold:

  • Use a lunch bag with a freeze pack insert or place a freezing gel bag with your child’s lunch.
  • Refrigerate the lunch the night before including beverages.
  • Freeze sandwiches. Hold the lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, as they don’t freeze well.
  • Encourage your child to keep their lunch in the coolest place possible at school.
