Do you regularly visit farmers markets? Farmers follow “Good Agricultural Practices” to enhance food safety. But consumers have important responsibilities too. Fruits and vegetables may contain harmful bacteria like E. coli. Contamination may occur anywhere from the farm to your table.
Washing is very important. Start with your hands before you handle fresh produce.
To wash fruits and vegetables remove and discard the outer leaves on vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Wash whole produce and scrub if possible, under clean, cool, running water.
Do not wash fruits and vegetables with household detergents. Some fruits and vegetables can absorb the detergents. Detergents are not intended for use directly on food.
