Capital Press’s Ongoing Investment in WSU
For years, Capital Press, the region’s premiere agricultural newspaper, has put its money where its people are by giving scholarships to students majoring in some aspect of agriculture.
Every spring, the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences holds an awards banquet to recognize outstanding students, faculty and staff. And each year, Capital Press has sent a representative to present a scholarship to an outstanding junior.
As Capital Press managing editor Carl Sampson recently wrote, this year’s scholarship went to Riley Ray Mengarelli. “Mengarelli, who grew up on the family farm in Toppenish, Wash., has a grade point average of 3.98. His major is animal sciences with a minor in agricultural economics and management,” Sampson said.
“This spring,” Sampson continued, “we had an added twist. Presenting the scholarship to Mengarelli was Samantha Graf, a 2006 WSU graduate in ag communications who is pursuing a master’s degree in the same discipline. Not only is she a WSU graduate, but starting on June 2, she will join the Capital Press full-time as our Central Washington field reporter.
“We’re proud of the role we play in promoting agricultural education in the West,” he added. “Folks like Riley Ray Mengarelli and Samantha Graf show us the value of that investment.”

Tri-State Forest and Range Owners Field Day June 14
A field day for owners of privately held forest and range lands in eastern Washington, northern Idaho and northern Oregon is scheduled June 14 south of Dayton.
“The Forest and Range Owners Field Day will offer information that will cover topics applicable in all three states,” said Andy Perleberg, Washington State University Extension forestry educator.
The event will cover 24 topics, including wildfire risk reduction, working with consulting foresters, managing a timber sale, rangeland health assessment, cost-incentive programs and more. Participants will be able to attend up to six presentations.
Gates open at 8 a.m. Presentations will take place at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. A barbecue lunch benefiting FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) will be offered on-site for $8, but must be ordered no later than June 9. Participants also are welcome to bring a lunch or dine in Dayton.
Registration is $20 per person and $30 for two or more people in the same party before June 9. Registration on site is $30 per person and $40 for two or more.
