Gardener Education Conference Set Oct. 20-23

PULLMAN, Wash. — Some 400 gardeners from throughout the west are expected to attend the 1996 Western Regional Master Gardener Conference and Advanced Training, Oct. 20-23 in Tacoma, Wash.

Sharing through education, experience and fellowship is the conference theme. The program is of special interest to Master Gardeners, but is open to anyone, says Mike McGee, Washington State Master Gardener Foundation, Olympia.

There will be 45 specialty training sessions and three general sessions. David Tarrant, host of the “Canadian Gardener” television show will be a guest speaker.

Tours of Bloedel Reserve, Lakewold, Evandan Gardens, the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection, Point Defiance gardens and the Cascade Northwest Composting site are planned.

Classes include a broad spectrum of topics:

  • Impact of Plants on People’s Health and Well Being.
  • The Information Highway: What’s In It for Us?
  • New Plants for Northwest Gardens.
  • Development of a Backyard Sanctuary.
  • Growing with Plants: Youth Gardening.
  • Planning Water Wise Gardens.
  • Food for Thought: Edible Landscaping.
  • Environmental Ethics in the Garden.
  • Diagnosing Plant Problems.
  • Revitalizing an Old Yard.
