Chinese Journalists Spend Day at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. — With the potential to reach more than 300 million people in China, members of the Chinese media are coming to Pullman to take home a taste of Washington agriculture and Washington State University.

Sixteen members of the Chinese media will visit the Pullman campus on Monday, June 19, as part of a week-long tour highlighting Washington’s agricultural products, especially Washington sweet cherries. The Washington State Fruit Commission is sponsoring the tour. The journalists will create an educational video highlighting Washington’s agriculture to promote trade of Washington agricultural products and student recruiting in China.

The group will interact throughout the day with various departments and schools at WSU, including the International Marketing Program for Agricultural Commodities and Trade (IMPACT) Center, the School of Economic Sciences, the School of Hospitality and Business Management, the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication. Chen Zhi-jiang, the founder of Greenery Food and Beverage Franchising Co., and a WSU graduate student will be baking a cobbler using Washington state sweet cherries. Zhi-jiang is a famous Chinese chef and owns 50 restaurants in China, with 22 of them located in the Guangdong Province.

Television stations being represented are Guangdong TV, which reaches an audience of 210 million; Shanghai Oriental TV, which airs in 29 provinces in China and reaches 200 million people, plus an additional 600 million via satellite transmission; and Guangzhou TV, which reaches an audience of 30 million in Southern China. The video has the potential to reach not only China but also Japan, Australia, Africa, Eastern Europe and other overseas countries.

“The event should be outstanding and will garner both Northwest cherries and WSU some positive ‘earned’ media time across China,” said B.J. Thurlby, president of the Washington State Fruit Commission and of the Northwest Cherry Growers.

The IMPACT Center at WSU coordinated the tour. While visiting campus, the group also will tour the WSU Creamery, the Edward R. Murrow School of Communications and attend a salmon lunch in the Todd dining room.
