CAHNRS Annual Fall Festival is just around the corner
The annual Fall Festival is Thursday, Sept. 12 from 4-6 p.m. at Spillman Plaza, between Johnson and Hulbert Halls. Fall Festival is CANHRS’ signature back-to-school event. It’s our way to welcome newcomers to the CAHNRS family and welcome returning students back home. Come check out 50 exhibits on student clubs, departments, and programs. Meet other students, professors, advisors, associate deans, and the Dean of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. Two undergraduate and two graduate students will have a chance to win a scholarship toward a CAHNRS major through a raffle drawing. Enjoy free dinner, Ferdinand’s ice cream, and games. The National Potato Council (NPC) has awarded Rhett Spear (Horticulture Ph.D. graduate student working with Mark Pavek) its 2013-14 Academic Scholarship. Read the full WSU News story here.
Qin Zhang, director of the Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems at Washington State University, is one of 13 fellows recently named to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) for 2013. Read the announcement in WSU News here.
Diwaker Tripathi, a graduate student in the Molecular Plant Sciences Program, will present the results of his research on controlling plant viral diseases at an imaging and robotics symposium later this month in St. Louis. Tripathi’s research focuses on understanding the interactions between virally coded plant proteins during virus infection and replication. The symposium is presented by the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, a nonprofit research institute based in St. Louis working to improve the human condition through plant science.
Lydia Tymon, a graduate student in the Department of Plant Pathology, was awarded second place in the Student Paper Competition at the 2013 American Phytopathological Society (APS) Pacific Division Meeting held recently in Tucson, Arizona. Tymon’s research presentation, “Fungicide resistance of two Alternaria species to azoxystrobin and boscalid in the Columbia Basin,” was recognized for scientific quality, originality, and significance.
Dr. Doug Walsh, Professor of Entomology, has been chosen as the 2013 recipient of the Excellence in IPM Award from the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Doug will be recognized at the ESA annual meeting in Austin, TX on November 10, 2013.
Natalie Boyle, PhD student in entomology under the direction of Dr. Walsh has been selected to receive the 2013 Larry Larson Graduate Student Award for Leadership in Applied Entomology. This award presented by the Entomological Foundation and sponsored by Dow AgroSciences honors the legacy of the late Larry Larson, a longtime employee of Dow AgroSciences and active member and past President of ESA and board member of the Entomological Foundation. Boyle’s MS program was an original research and demonstration project on evaluating the effects of brood comb pesticide residues on honey bee colony health.
Undergraduate apparel design senior, Melanie Bibko has juried design accepted for exhibition at the International Textiles and Apparel Association in New Orleans, October 16, 2013, with Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textile Department. The active wear design, created as a final project in AMDT 312 taught by Dr. Carol Salusso, will be modeled in the annual Live Gallery event. Melanie plans to expand her active wear collection within her senior line for the 2014 Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show in April at Beasley Coliseum.

School of Food Science Distinguished Lecture Series: Guest Speaker Dr. Masami Takeuchi, Food Safety Officer from the Food Safety and Quality Unit (AGND) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is coming to speak. The event will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at 3:00 pm in FSHN T101 and her seminar title is: “Taking Food Safety to the Corners of the World: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations”. Topics will include the work of the Food Safety and Quality section of the FAO, basic requirements to work at international organizations, and internship and volunteer programs at FAO. The seminar will be followed by a reception in FSHN 103. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the seminar and reception. A flyer with more information is available here. New this Fall! 2013 School of Food Science (SFS) Faculty Seminar Series. The main objective of this seminar series is to share what research is happening in the SFS, and to foster future cooperative research/teaching/outreach opportunities. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend. The seminar will be held on Mondays at 1:10 PM in FSHN 104A. Here are the first two seminars scheduled this fall semester:

WSU Organic Farm on the Mall: Fresh-picked organic produce from WSU’s Organic Farm will be offered for sale at a farm stand on WSU’s Terrell Mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, running through early October. The farm accepts cash and checks only.
Friday Fruit Sales! The Tukey Horticulture Orchard will begin its Friday “ONLY” and “Already Picked” fruit sales September 6th from 12 to 6 pm. Friday “ONLY” sales will continue through September. Saturday sales and U-Picks will be added in October. For more information visit the Orchard website (http://horticulture.wsu.edu/orchard).
