Increasingly, there are more prepared food items for sale on social media sites such as Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, and Next Door. While photos and write-ups are tempting, be knowledgeable about food safety before buying. Forty-nine states have cottage food regulations, allowing low-risk products produced in a home kitchen. However, regulations vary from state to state.

Products such as casseroles including meat and poultry and other potentially hazardous foods are being sold on local social media websites. Before you buy, it’s important to do the following:

  • Understand the difference between low-risk food prepared in home kitchens and high-risk foods prepared in commercially inspected kitchens. Ask and verify.
  • Check for licenses and health and safety certifications.
  • All products must have labels.
