How many thermometers are there in your kitchen? Well equipped kitchens have several types of thermometers to ensure food safety. While there are many types of specialized thermometers – it isn’t necessary to spend lots of money. Having a few simple thermometers to monitor temperatures in your refrigerator, freezer, and for cooking food is all you need. Here are the basics:
- Even if your refrigerator and freezer have automatic temperature gauges, keep additional thermometers in both as a back-up. In the refrigerator, place the thermometer on the shelf.
- Use a simple instant-read thermometer to check end-point cooking temperatures. While it is necessary to remove items from the oven, instant-read thermometers are simple to use, inexpensive, and can be calibrated.
- Finally, be sure to read and follow manufacturer’s directions for your thermometer.
