This is Susie Craig with Washington State University Extension and here’s today’s Food Safety in a Minute.
Did you know that 1.4 million seniors experience a foodborne illness each year?
As we age, there is a natural decline in our ability to fight infections. Our stomach becomes less acidic, and our sense of smell and taste declines. Because of physical changes, senior citizens are at risk of serious consequences of foodborne illness. This means if you contract the illness, your symptoms may last longer and be more severe.
If you are an older American, here are some ways to protect yourself from foodborne illness:
- Avoid eating raw or undercooked seafood
- Avoid eating raw sprouts
- Thoroughly rinse fresh fruits and vegetables under running water before eating.
- Drink pasteurized juices and milk
- Avoid eating foods with raw eggs.
- Clean and sanitize your kitchen counters, refrigerators, and utensils
- And, wash your hands often. Have you wondered how to store fresh produce from the Farmer’s Market or the grocery store?
