This is Susie Craig, welcome to Food Safety in a Minute.

Reusable shopping bags are great for the environment but could be bad for your health. To prevent cross contamination, designate four reusable bags for groceries. Use one specific for meat, poultry, and fish, for fresh produce, dry, packaged food, and an insulated bag for refrigerated and frozen food.

Clean after every use. Cotton or canvas bags may be machine washed in hot water and detergent. Reusable bags made of recycled plastic containers can be machine washed or scrubbed by hand, rinsed, and allowed to air dry. Generally, bags made of nylon, polyester, bamboo, and hemp are best scrubbed by hand with hot soapy water, rinsed, and air dried. Insulated bags should be washed, rinsed and air dried with special attention to the seam lines.
