From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.
The disease-causing bacteria Listeria monocytogenes can be found almost everywhere there are moist environments: Soil, water, food, and even your refrigerator. Outbreaks in the US are frequently linked with raw, unpasteurized milk and cheese, ice cream, hot dogs, deli meats, and raw or smoked fish.
Sidestep this foodborne illness:
- By cooking animal products thoroughly following USDA end-point cooking temperature guidelines.
- Thoroughly washing fresh produce.
- Separating uncooked meat, poultry, and seafood from ready to eat food during food preparation.
- Avoiding consumption of raw milk and cheese made from raw milk.
- Cleaning and sanitizing your refrigerator often.
This is Susie Craig from Washington State University Extension.
