This is Food Safety in a Minute from Washington State University Extension.
For a healthy holiday weekend, follow the Core Four Practices from the Partnership for Food Safety Education: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill. This week, we highlight Clean.
The Clean Core practice includes food contact surfaces such as your hands, preparation, and storage equipment, and washing fruits and vegetables.
- Wash your hands for 20 seconds. In a study reported in Food Protection Trends, 65% of consumers did not wash their hands before starting food preparation.
- Clean dishes, utensils, counters with hot soapy water after preparing each food item. This step prevents cross contamination. Be conscientious of kitchen towels. Keep them clean.
- Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables in cool, running water. Wash or scrub surfaces of firm skinned produce.
