From Washington State University Extension, this is Food Safety in a Minute.
Are you planning a Labor Day BBQ with friends and family? If so, you may be cooking hot dogs on your grill. Hot dogs may say fully cooked on the package. However, they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Always avoid eating hot dogs – right out of the package.
According to the National Partnership for Food Safety Education, hot dogs should be cooked until steaming or until they reach 165 degrees F using a food thermometer to test. Checking for the safe internal temperature is especially important if you are pregnant, 65 and older, or have a weakened immune system. Always refrigerate hot dogs immediately after purchasing. Unopened packages may be kept for two weeks, opened packages for
up to one week.
This is Susie Craig from Food Safety in a Minute.
