Animal science major Darya Maysam spent the summer participating in research projects on antimicrobial resistance, infectious disease surveillance, and epidemiological modeling while studying abroad in Kenya through WSU’s Research Immersion in Nairobi program.

Ava Rambo will graduate this fall with a bachelor’s degree in merchandising and pursue a master’s degree in WSU’s Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles. As a National Retail Federation (NRF) student ambassador, Rambo participated in the NRF Foundation Student Program, which allowed her to connect with professionals in the retail space and tour New York City’s Nordstrom and Lego flagship stores. She received the outstanding senior in merchandising award this spring and participated in recruitment events as a student representative.

Meenakshi Richardson and Alyn Rivera are the 2023 recipients of the inaugural graduate and undergraduate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence Awards, respectively. Richardson, who is pursuing a PhD in prevention science, is part of a DEI workgroup in the prevention science program and serves as the chapter president for WSU’s Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, among other roles. Rivera, who graduated in spring with a bachelor’s degree in human development, served as orientation coordinator for La Bienvenida, a Spanish-language orientation program for new students. She also spent two years as a peer mentor and assisted with advising for classes. 

Freddy Reyes.

As an intern at WSU IAREC, Heritage University graduate and McNair Scholar Alfredo “Freddy” Reyes gained valuable agricultural experience in the field and the lab by studying the science behind tree fruit crops. Reyes has participated in a variety of projects including apple data collection, drone technology evaluation, and sweet cherry harvesting.

Valerie Achziger just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and will soon begin pursuing her master’s degree. She is very active in WSU’s Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences organization. 

Skylar Woehrle.

Skylar Woehrle, a wildlife ecology and conservation science major, spent a semester studying abroad in Tanzania. While there, she studied wildlife management in a field-based learning environment while surrounded by peers, teachers, and members of the community who are committed to environmental stewardship. 

Jared Grace.

Jared Grace, a viticulture and enology major, is the creator of a wine pairing column for The Daily Evergreen, WSU’s student newspaper. In each column, Grace describes a food that pairs well with a particular wine, helping readers find a good match for their next meal.
