New fund helps CAHNRS students overcome unforeseen financial hurdles

The cost of going to college is higher than ever, and many students are only one car repair or medical procedure away from needing to drop out for financial reasons.

To help our students complete their degrees, Cashup Davis Family Endowed Dean Wendy Powers has established the CAHNRS Community Fund.

“Scholarships from this fund will support the next generation of leaders—our own students—in reaching their full potential,” Powers said. “The goal is to keep on a path to completion those students who might not otherwise finish college because of an immediate financial need.”

By preparing the next generation to tackle the unexpected, the fund will ensure a resilient Washington that can easily pivot when faced with future challenges like climate change, an economic recession, or even another pandemic.

“I see this fund as giving to the future of Washington,” said Powers, who has agreed to match up to $4,000 in contributions on an annual basis.

The CAHNRS Community Fund has no application deadline; once the endowment is fully funded, scholarships will be available to provide financial support to students as needs arise.

“How much one gives is far less important than the message it sends to our students that the CAHNRS community is rooting for their success,” Powers said. “I know the CAHNRS community is a generous group, and my hope is the fund receives contributions long after my time as dean. The possibilities are endless.”
