Preparing for Emergencies

Are you ready to feed your family during the next big winter storm, earthquake or natural disaster? There are many things you can do to plan ahead for emergencies that include power outages.

Stock emergency supplies and establish a family plan. Supplies should include adequate food and water for several days for family members and for your pets. Include a hand can opener, battery powered radio, extra batteries, emergency cooking equipment for outdoor use, a flashlight, candles, fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit. The American Red Cross has great advice for coping with natural disasters. Check out their website.

Stock your pantry with foods that don’t require refrigeration, like canned meats and fish, canned fruits and vegetables, dried foods, peanut better, jam, and crackers. If you’re creative, there are lots of choices to get you and your family through an emergency.
