Fruit and vegetable safety begins on the farm – with the grower. Farming is a complicated, complex business. As we’ve moved to cities and metro areas and away from a direct connection with farming, it’s easy to overlook the agricultural practices farmers employ everyday to assure food safety for customers.

While there is no way to assure absolute safety in fresh produce, farmers use good agricultural practices to reduce contamination risks. The next time you visit a farmer’s market or your grocery store, talk with farmers or the produce manager and learn first-hand about the safe practices used on the farm, during harvest, and transport to you. It’s important to your health.
