WSU Student Top Weed Science Grad Student in Nation

PULLMAN, Wash. — WSU’s Dean Riechers recently received the “Outstanding Graduate Student Award” by the Weed Science Society of America.

Riechers received his doctorate from WSU in December and now is a post doctoral employee in the crop and soil sciences department. As a graduate student he conducted research on the development of herbicide safeners for wheat, in an effort to develop new tools for the control of serious grass weed problems.

The award included a $2,500 cash gift.

He plans a career involving research and teaching in weed science, with a special interest in plant biochemistry.

In 1995 Riechers received the Young Scientist Pre-doctoral Research Award from the Agrochemicals Division of the American Chemical Society.

His advisor was Patrick Fuerst.
