PULLMAN, Wash. – Gustavo Barbosa-Canovas, a Washington State University professor and International Marketing Program for Agricultural Commodities & Trade scientist, was elected as a Fellow for the Institute of Food Science and Technology Tuesday.
Barbosa-Canovas is a professor of food engineering in the School of Biological Systems Engineering at WSU, where he teaches food processing and engineering courses.
Fellowship is the senior grade of membership within the IFST and is awarded to only those who have made either a substantial contribution to food science and technology or who have reached a position of seniority and authority with the profession, according to the IFST Web site.
Barbosa-Canovas works with the IMPACT Center as a researcher developing a manufacturing process for a low-fat yogurt product and discovering alternate processes to extend the shelf life of milk and vegetable products.
“Gustavo has made important contributions to the competitiveness of Washington agriculture through his outstanding research,” said Thomas I. Wahl, director for the IMPACT Center. “He is a valuable member of the IMPACT Center research team.”
The IFST is the leading Europe-based independent professional qualifying body for food scientists and technologists that focuses on advancing the standing of food science and technology as a subject and profession, as well as serving the interests of the public and members.
