OLYMPIA, Wash. — Nearly 300 4-H members and adult volunteers from across the state descended on the state capitol February 13-15 to attend the youth organization’s 4-H Know Your Government Conference.
The annual conference has provided youth with a glimpse at different aspects of government for more than 20 years.
“This year’s conference coincided with a presidential election, so it was natural to use the curriculum on developing a political part platform,” said Carol Beckman WSU Cooperative Extension State 4-H program coordinator.
“Participants learned how to construct a platform plank at pre-conference training sessions back in their own county. In Olympia, they were assigned to committees where they debated issues, defended their ideas and reached compromises to put the Know Your Government Party platform together.”
The highlight of the event was “Breakfast with Your Legislator.” The event provided legislators an opportunity to meet with their young constituents and discuss issues important to youth. After breakfast the youth posed for pictures with legislators representing their districts.
