2 WSU Dairy Students Win National Awards

PULLMAN, Wash. — Two Washington State University students from Everson and Lynden were honored Tuesday (July 16) at the American Diary Science Association meetings in Corvallis, Ore.

Marvin Hoekema, a senior in animal sciences, received the Gold Medal for outstanding scholastic and leadership achievements. He also placed third in the Production Undergraduate Paper Contest and was elected second vice president of the ADSA Student Affiliate Division. He has been president of the Cooperative University Dairy Students organization, commonly called CUDS and of the Dairy Club.

As a freshman, Hoekema was WSU’s Outstanding Freshman in the Department of Animal Sciences and a Dean’s Merit Scholar. His parents are Percy and Lois Hoekema, Everson.

Jeff Polinder, a senior in animal sciences, received the ADSA Silver Medal for outstanding scholastic and leadership achievements. He also has been an officer in the Dairy Club and in CUDS. He is the son of Sherm and Phyllis Polinder, Lynden.
