CAHNRS Coug Connections: Kelli Young

Each week, we will showcase one of our CAHNRS Ambassadors, a student leadership organization that encourages students to pursue higher education and serves as a liaison between the college and the greater community. This week, we’re featuring Kelli Young, a junior from Bainbridge Island, Wash.

What are you studying?

I’m majoring in Interior Design.

What is a fun fact about you?

I’ve been working on the design of my future house since I was fourteen.

Why WSU?

WSU is a family. I grew up in a town where people tended to stick to their own circles, and WSU is the opposite of that. My first visit here was all the time I needed to decide that this was home. You’ll never be lost at WSU. There are so many resources that are all organized and easy to find/understand. And there are people from every background – all of which are excited to be a Coug!

What is special about being a CAHNRS Coug?

CAHNRS majors are interdisciplinary, so we all get exposed to every different path inside any one subject. Because of that we make friends with different interests and are one big family.

Where do you want to be (professionally or personally) 10 years after you graduate?

The ultimate goal is to have the house I designed built, to have my real estate investment business up and running, and of course to be happy and successful in the interior design field.

Favorite class you have taken within CAHNRS so far? Why?

Interior Design 203: Sophomore Interior Design Studio, because it was my first in-depth class about interior design. The projects were adaptive reuse (re-purposing old buildings) which is the specialty I hope to go into.

What other extracurricular activities have you been involved in?

ASID: American Society of Interior Designers, Solar Decathlon team doing graphic design and project construction, and Gallery Design team (inside Carpenter Hall).

Favorite Ferdinand’s flavor of ice cream?

Apple Cup Crisp!
