Laura Hill, Qin Zhang elected to Washington State Academy of Sciences

Two CAHNRS faculty members, Laura Griner Hill and Qin Zhang, were among seven Washington State University faculty elected this year to the Washington State Academy of Sciences.

WSAS announced 21 new members on July 15, 2020. The honor recognizes the new members for their outstanding records of scientific and technical achievement as well as their willingness to work on behalf of the Academy to bring the best available science to bear on issues within the state of Washington.

Laura Griner Hill
Hill is currently WSU vice provost for Faculty Development and Affairs, and is a professor in the Department of Human Development.

She was named a member for her contributions to a significant shift in the field of prevention, toward the study of how to effectively implement, evaluate and scale up prevention programs.

This work helps significantly decrease the risk of substance abuse in young people.

Qin Zhang
Zhang is a professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering and director of the Center for Precision & Automated Agricultural Systems.

He was recognized for contributions leading to the adoption of automation technologies in agricultural production; for core technology development for intelligent farming machinery and smart agriculture; and for pioneering an emerging science frontier through the study of agricultural cybernetics.

The new members will be formally inducted at the 13th Annual Members’ Meeting on Sept. 10, 2020.
